BPCL Launches 2G Bioethanol Refinery in Odisha: Turning Rice Straw into Clean Fuel

India has taken another major step toward sustainable energy with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) commissioning its second-generation (2G) bioethanol refinery in Bargarh, Odisha.

The refinery has a production capacity of 100 kilolitres per day (KLPD) and uses rice straw as its primary feedstock. Through advanced biomass processing technologies, the plant converts crop residue into fuel-grade ethanol.

By utilizing rice straw that would otherwise be burned in fields, the refinery is expected to significantly reduce air pollution while creating value from agricultural waste.

The project also supports India's ethanol blending program, aimed at reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving energy security.

Designed as a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) facility, the plant ensures that no wastewater is released into the environment and maximizes resource efficiency.

In addition to environmental benefits, the refinery is expected to create new income opportunities for farmers by generating demand for agricultural residues.

The project achieved around 20 million accident-free work hours during construction.

The commissioning of this refinery marks an important milestone in India's transition toward cleaner and more sustainable fuel alternatives.
